Please look at https://prdev.willowgarage.com/trac/ros/ticket/447 I'm pretty close to having cleaned everything up.
Eric: What is the status of the old Image message in std_msgs? I think we're mostly or completely transitioned over to the image_msgs package
Ken: std_msgs (as well as std_srvs) needs a mainpage.dox
Josh: I think everything but Empty should go away, but I'm willing to compromise and say everything but the primitive types.
From Jeremy: All the multiarrays are used. I think they constitute primitives and I would, personally, leave them in standard messages. Unless someone thought, as evidenced by their parallel and somewhat gratuitous nature, that it was worth pushing for the construction of a generalized ROS multiarray primitive.
